Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering was started in the year 1956. This was followed by Post Graduate Programme in Computer Methods and Applications in Structural Engineering in the year 1969, Part time B.E programme in Civil Engineering in the year 1971 and PhD Programme in Civil Engineering in the year 1978. Post Graduate Programme in Environmental Engineering and Management was started in the year 2005. Post Graduate Programme in Construction Management was started in the year 2011. All the programmes were approved by the AICTE and the UG Course B.E (Civil Engineering) accredited by the NBA.

Currently, the student intake strength is 120 for the UG course under this department , 18 for each of its PG Programmes and 70 for the Part time B.E Civil Engineering. There are currently 37 faculty members in the department. Most of them are having doctoral degree in Civil Engineering. The average length of service of faculty member is 18.

The Civil Engineering education at Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, focuses on outcomes rather than simply on outputs. The courses offered are focused towards training the students to make them adaptable to any type of role in the different fields of Civil Engineering.

  • The Graduates of this Programme with proficiency in mathematics and physical sciences will excel in the core areas of civil engineering such as structural, environmental and water resources engineering.
  • The graduates will plan, produce detailed drawings, write specification, and prepare cost estimates.

  • The graduates of this programme will have a strong base in analytical and technical knowledge to adapt them to work in interdisciplinary projects involving formulation, analysis, design and to meet challenges in real Civil engineering projects.
  • The graduates of this programme will have the skill to involve themselves in basic and applied research and development activities in core areas by effectively handling complex structural engineering and inter-disciplinary projects.
  • The graduates of this programme will possess an attitude to update themselves in modern tools of structural analysis and design techniques in-line with global work environment.

M.E. Environmental Engineering and Management (Full Time)
