Coimbatore Institute of Technology is an Autonomous Institution earlier affiliated to Bharathiar University and currently to Anna University. The Institute was accorded Autonomous status by the Bharathiar University in the year 1987 for the first time for a period of 5 years.The University Grants Commission issued concurrence for declaring Coimbatore Institute of Technology as an Autonomous Institution for a period of 5 years starting from 1987 to 1992. Subsequently two more extensions each of five years duration were given from the year 1992-1997 and 1997-2002 making a total of 15 years of Autonomous Status from 1987 to 2002. Anna University Chennai extended the Autonomous Status for the period 2002 to 2007 on ad hoc basis.Anna University Chennai extended the Autonomous Status UGC further extended the Autonomy Ex-post-facto approval for the year 1997-98 to 2007-2008 and from 2013-2014.
The Institute has set up statutory bodies such as Governing Council, Academic Council, Standing Committee of the Academic Council, Board of studies and Non-statutory bodies like Planning and Evaluation Committee, Finance Committee, Library Committee, Curriculum Development cell, Discipline Committee, Result Passing Board etc., for effective functioning of Autonomous system.Office of the Controller of Examinations manned by Dr.R.Sriram, Controller of Examinations, Dr.R.Sathyanarayan Sridhar, Deputy Controller of Examinations and assisted by thirteen well-qualified members facilitates the efficient functioning of the Autonomous System.For character building and overall development of the students, not only as a competent engineer, but also as a responsible citizen of the country, a course called `Science of Creativity and Professional Ethics has been introduced since the inception of the Autonomous scheme in the year 1987.
