One Day workshop on

“Earthquake Resistant Design of Masonry Structures’

March 11, 2009

A one Day workshop on  “Earthquake Resistant Design of Masonry Structures’ was  organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Coimbatore Institute of Technology , Coimbatore in association with United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) , India on 11th March, 2009 at CIT. This workshop was organized to bring out the awareness among the practicing Civil Engineers, the need for providing earthquake resistant features in masonry buildings and the marginal increase in cost to achieve this.

CIT has recently installed a shake Table in the Structural Engineering Laboratory to test the real life structures when they are subjected to Earthquake loads. UNDP has sponsored a project to test the masonry structures with different bonding types and to suggest ways and means for improving seismic resistance of the habitats in India. The test results and findings were presented to the delegates in this one day workshop. Demonstrations and hands on training were also imparted. About 100 delegates from various parts of the state attended this workshop.

This workshop was inaugurated by Dr.A.R.Santhakumar, Emeritus Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras(IITM), Chennai and he delivered lectures on ‘Condition Assessment of Buildings’  and ‘Retrofit of Non-Engineered and Masonry Buildings’.

Dr.K.Subramanian, Chairman of this workshop delivered lecture on ‘Design and Construction of Masonry structures with Earthquake Resistant Features’.

Dr.V.G.Srisanthi, Co-ordinator of the workshop explained and demonstrated the ‘Testing of 3D Masonry Models with and without Earthquake Resistant Features using the Shake Table’ in Structural Engineering Laboratory.
