Industrial Energy Audit – Planning, Optimization, Cost Reduction

Report

Energy is universally acknowledged to be the mainstay of an industrial society. Without an adequate supply of energy, the stability of the social and economic order, as well as the political structure of a society is in jeopardy. As the world supply of inexpensive, but non-renewable, fossil energy sources decreases, the need for energy conservation becomes ever more critical. Recently, the issue of energy efficiency and conservation emerged as a serious challenge. Energy conservation can and must play an important role in future energy strategy, because it can ameliorate adverse impacts on the environment rapidly and economically. Energy cost is one of the main cost drivers for industries, domestic and commercial establishments. Reduction in energy consumption leads to reduction in operating costs, and thereby helps to improve the profitability of organizations. Energy conservation can be easily achieved by proper energy audit of the plant.  An energy audit determines where and how energy is being utilized. It identifies measures to improve efficiency and provides a benchmark against which future building performance can be compared. Energy Audit is a comprehensive approach that zooms in specific issues like energy cost optimization, pollution control, safety aspects and suggests the methods to improve the operating and maintenance practices of the system.  Industrial energy audit report provides the vital information base and can be used as the starting point for feasibility studies, design of new energy efficient processes, retrofitting existing systems, implementation of energy conservation equipments, technology and development of energy management plans.  In order to fulfill those requirements, One Day Weekend Program  on “INDUSTRIAL ENERGY AUDIT – PLANNING, OPTIMIZATION, COST REDUCTION” was organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 07.08.2010 at Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore-14, Tamil Nadu. This one day program has provided an excellent opportunity to listen to the experts in this field and also to discuss various issues in industrial energy audit.

The response to participate this short-term course was overwhelming from all the parts of the nation, a total number of 55 participants have participated which includes 32 participants from leading  industrial organizations, 18 participants from academic institutions and 5 student participants from  neibourghing institutions.
